Understanding Google Ads Attribution for Ecommerce

Why Attribution Matters More Than You Think

Attribution determines how conversion credit is assigned across touchpoints. Get it wrong, and you'll make bad budget decisions.

With Google's shift to data-driven attribution (DDA) as default, understanding this is more important than ever.

    The Attribution Models

Last click: 100% credit to final click. Simple but misleading.

First click: 100% credit to first interaction. Values awareness.

Linear: Equal credit across all touchpoints. Democratic but bland.

Time decay: More credit to recent touchpoints. Balanced approach.

    Position-based: 40% first, 40% last, 20% middle. Popular choice.

Data-driven: Google's AI distributes credit based on patterns. Now the default.

    How Data-Driven Attribution Works

    Google analyses your conversion paths:

    • Which channels appear together?
    • What sequences convert?
    • What's the role of each touchpoint?

It then assigns credit proportionally based on actual contribution.

    The Ecommerce Attribution Challenge

    Typical ecommerce journey:

    1. Day 1: Generic search "running shoes" (Shopping click)
    2. Day 3: Brand search "[your brand] running shoes" (Search click)
    3. Day 4: Direct visit, browses
    4. Day 5: Remarketing ad click (Display)
    5. Day 6: Direct visit, purchases

Who gets credit? With last-click: Display. With DDA: distributed across Shopping, Search, and Display.

Why This Matters for Budget Decisions

    Last-click attribution typically:

    • Undervalues Shopping and top-of-funnel
    • Overvalues brand and remarketing
    • Creates misleading ROAS comparisons

Result? You underfund acquisition and overfund conversion campaigns.

    Adjusting for Attribution

    When comparing campaigns:

    • Use the same attribution model
    • Consider the role (awareness vs. conversion)
    • Look at assisted conversions, not just attributed

In Google Ads, check "Model comparison" report to see how different models value your campaigns.

    Conversion Lag and Lookback Windows

Ecommerce often has conversion lag. Check:

    • Time Lag report (how long from first click to conversion)
    • Path Length report (how many interactions)

Adjust your lookback window accordingly. High-AOV products often need 90 days.
