Google Shopping With MAP Pricing: How to Win When You Can't Compete on Price
When price is fixed, the listing wins the click. Titles, GTINs, stock status, delivery promise and review count decide who gets picked out of a row of identical prices, and those are all things you control in the feed rather than on the margin.
The second lever is what you sell alongside the product. Bundles and service add-ons create SKUs that sit outside the MAP price and usually carry the margin that lets the campaign work at all.
What decides the click when every price is identical?
Relevance and clarity. Google ranks Shopping listings on bid, expected click through rate and feed quality, and when price is neutral the last two carry most of the weight.
- Title format: brand, model number, key spec, variant. In that order.
- Correct GTIN so you appear in the product comparison and related listings.
- Accurate availability, because out of stock listings suppress the whole feed.
- Shipping data specific enough for Google to show a delivery date.
- Seller ratings and product reviews, which are the only visible tiebreaker.
How should the feed be built for MAP products?
Build the title around how people search, not around how the supplier names the product. Supplier feeds are written for internal catalogues and are usually the single biggest cause of missed impressions.
A typical supplier title reads "XR450 Series Wall Mounted Unit, White". The search is "brand XR450 white wall mounted". The corrected title puts brand first, keeps the model number intact, and includes the finish and the fitting type. That one change moves a product from matching nothing to matching every model number search.
Add custom labels for margin band, MAP status, stock depth and seasonality, because those are the fields you will actually segment campaigns by later.
How do bundles change the maths?
A bundle is a new SKU with its own price and its own margin, and it takes you out of a direct price comparison.
Worked example. A £600 MAP product returns £60 gross margin. At a £12 cost per click and a 2 percent conversion rate, acquisition costs £600 and the sale loses money. The same product bundled with £150 of accessories at £90 additional margin now carries £150 total, and the same £600 acquisition cost still fails. Push conversion to 4 percent on a listing that shows a real delivery date and in stock status, and acquisition drops to £300, which the bundle can support and the bare product cannot.
This is the reason MAP catalogues need their own campaigns. Bare products and bundled products cannot share a target return.
How should MAP campaigns be structured?
Separate by margin, not by category. Use custom labels to split the catalogue into bands and give each band its own campaign and its own target.
- Band A: bundles and own service add-ons, highest margin, most aggressive target.
- Band B: MAP products with healthy margin and strong stock position.
- Band C: thin margin MAP lines, capped, run mainly for basket building.
- Excluded: products where the margin cannot cover a single click.
Excluding products feels wrong and is usually the fastest improvement available on a MAP catalogue.
What should we measure?
Profit per product, not return on ad spend per campaign. On a fixed price catalogue, two products with the same ROAS can have completely different margins, so a campaign-level number tells you almost nothing.
Feed your cost of goods into the conversion value where you can, so bidding optimises towards profit rather than revenue.

Frequently asked questions
What is MAP pricing?
Minimum advertised price. It is a supplier rule setting the lowest price a stockist is allowed to display publicly, which means every authorised seller shows the same figure in Shopping results.
Can we show a lower price in the basket than in Shopping?
Google requires the price in your feed to match the price on the landing page, so a basket only discount cannot be used to undercut in the Shopping listing itself. Check your supplier agreement too, since many treat basket discounting as a MAP breach.
Does Shopping still work if we cannot be the cheapest?
Yes. When prices are identical, Google's ranking leans on relevance, click through rate and data quality, so a better title, correct GTIN, accurate stock and a real delivery date can win the click without a price advantage.
Should we sell MAP products through Performance Max or standard Shopping?
Split them. MAP products behave differently from products where you control price, so putting them in their own campaign lets you set a target that reflects their fixed margin instead of averaging it with everything else.
What about bundles?
Bundles are the main legitimate way around MAP. A product plus accessories or an extended warranty is a different SKU with its own price, and it can carry better margin than the base product. Check the wording of your agreement first.
