12 Red Flags When Hiring a Google Ads Agency

Don't Get Burned By a Bad Agency

I've audited accounts previously managed by agencies. Some of what I've seen is shocking.

Here are the warning signs that should make you think twice.

Red Flag #1: They Won't Give You Account Access

Your Google Ads account is YOURS. If they build it in their MCC and won't share access, they're holding your data hostage.

Red Flag #2: Long Lock-In Contracts

12-month minimums with no exit clause? Massive red flag. Good agencies don't need to trap you.

    Red Flag #3: Guaranteed Results

"We guarantee #1 rankings" or "Guaranteed 5x ROAS" — no one can promise this. Google controls the auction, not agencies.

Red Flag #4: No Relevant Case Studies

If they can't show examples of success in your industry or similar, they might be learning on your budget.

    Red Flag #5: Vague Pricing

If you can't understand what you're paying for, you probably shouldn't be paying it.

Red Flag #6: No Questions About Your Business

If they jump straight to a proposal without understanding your goals, margins, and target customers, expect generic management.

Red Flag #7: Junior Staff on Your Account

Met with senior partners, but account managed by a grad with 3 months experience? Common and problematic.

Red Flag #8: Template Reports Only

If every client gets identical reports with no strategic insight, you're just a number.

Red Flag #9: Slow Response Times

If it takes days to reply during the sales process, imagine during a campaign emergency.

Red Flag #10: Resistance to Your Involvement

Agencies that discourage you from looking at your own account have something to hide.

    Red Flag #11: Unrealistic Timelines

"Your campaign will be profitable in week 1" — unlikely. Honest agencies set realistic expectations.

Red Flag #12: No Performance Benchmarks

If they don't set goals or benchmarks, there's no accountability.

    What to Look For Instead

    Green flags:

    • Full account access from day one
    • Month-to-month or short-term contracts available
    • Clear pricing structure
    • Detailed onboarding process
    • Regular communication schedule
    • Named account manager
    • Relevant experience shared openly
